Energy saving tips - How to save money?

In the sections below, we have compiled some tips which should enable you to save energy. By behaving prudently, both in your household and in the office, you will save money and contribute to the common good by acting in solidarity. To make it easier for you to navigate, we have sorted our energy-saving tips into appropriate categories.

  • If possible, switch off devices completely when they are no longer needed.
  • If possible, do not use the stand-by mode of your devices.
  • Remove chargers from the socket after charging.
  • Do not put the refrigerator next to the stove.
  • Set the refrigerator temperature to 7 degrees. For the freezer, -18 degrees is enough.
  • Let warm food cool down before you put it in the refrigerator.
  • Only open the refrigerator door briefly if possible.
  • Make sure to defrost the refrigerator and freezer regularly.
  • The size of the stovetop should fit the pan.
  • Small amounts of food can be heated in the microwave oven.
  • Use the kettle to boil the water.
  • If possible, do not preheat the oven.
  • Use convection instead of top and bottom heat.
  • If available, use the economy and ECO programs on your devices.
  • If possible, do not wash the dishes by hand. Use the dishwasher.
  • Avoid taking a bath if possible. Showering saves you energy costs.
  • Try to keep showers as short as possible.
  • Purchasing economy shower heads and water saving attachments is recommended.
  • Hydraulically or electronically controlled instantaneous water heaters should be replaced by electronically controlled variants wherever possible.
  • Instantaneous water heaters should be set to a lower temperature if possible.
  • Make sure that you bleed your heating regularly.
  • In unused rooms, turn off the heating if possible (the room temperature should not fall below 16 degrees).
  • If possible, turn down the heating at night. (16 -17 degrees is enough).
  • During prolonged period away, you should also lower the temperature during the day.
  • If possible, you should only use the air conditioner when the indoor temperature is above 26 degrees.
  • In the summer, use sun protection such as blinds and shades, if available, to lower the indoor temperature.
  • Be sure to ventilate at night, in the summer, in order to lower the indoor temperature
  • When ventilating, you should ventilate briefly and intermittently with the windows wide open. You should turn off the heating in the meantime.

By the way: The numbers on the thermostat of the heating say nothing about how quickly the heating warms up. The numbers only stand for the temperature to which the radiator should heat up.

  • Preferably take advantage of daylight. Open the curtains and raise the blinds to take advantage of more daylight.
  • Turn off the light when leaving a room for a long time.
  • Replace incandescent and halogen bulbs with LED bulbs.
  • Use your desk lamp instead of the ceiling lamp.
  • Use smaller screens if possible.
  • You should use low brightness on your devices if possible.
  • We recommend that you turn off your devices completely during longer absences. Do not use the standby mode here either.
  • Replace your power strips with disconnectable power strips.
  • Preferably use a laptop instead of a desktop PC or, as the case may be, a tablet.
  • Activate the power saving mode or hibernation mode of the PC when leaving the workplace for a short time.
  • Make sure that you turn off unnecessary functions and programs on your devices.
  • Make sure to turn off the router's Wi-Fi at night.
  • If possible, you should set your smartphone to flight mode at night.
  • Short distances should be covered on foot or by bicycle.
  • Wherever possible, public transport is preferable to using your own vehicle.
  • It is advisable that you establish ‘carpools’.
  • Use car sharing, if appropriate offers are available.
  • Regular maintenance of your vehicle including checking the tyre pressure is recommended.
  • Make sure to change summer and winter tyres in time
  • If possible, do not use the air conditioner.
  • Shift gears and drive at low speeds whenever possible.
  • Be careful not to drive too fast in order to avoid higher fuel expenses.
  • If possible, avoid abrupt braking and acceleration when driving.
  • If you have the option, use your vehicle's automatic start-stop system.
  • Use modern, energy efficient equipment whenever possible.
  • Use network printers and multifunction devices instead of multiple devices whenever possible.
  • Print double-sided or multi-sided if possible.
  • Only print the pages from a longer document that are actually needed.
  • Use recycled paper whenever possible.
  • Keep your coffee hot in thermos jugs instead of using the coffee maker's hot plate.
  • If available, use coffee machines with automatic shut-off function.
  • Meetings can be held online instead of driving there by car.
  • Use the stairs instead of taking the lift.
